G20 policeman suspended

An officer thought to have pushed a man who died during the G20 protests has been suspended.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said the officer, who appeared to hit Ian Tomlinson with his baton and push him to the ground, identified himself to investigators.

Mr Tomlinson, a 47-year-old newspaper seller, later collapsed and died.

Video footage showed a confrontation between police and Mr Tomlinson and four officers later came forward to provide information to IPCC investigators.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson said the images "raise obvious concerns" and should be investigated fully.

A Metropolitan Police statement read: "An MPS TSG Police Constable has been suspended, effective immediately, in relation to the IPCC investigation into the death of Ian Tomlinson. Although the MPS consulted with the IPCC the decision was taken independently by the MPS having considered all the circumstances."
