Iran rally turns violent

Iran rally turns violent Police have clashed with supporters of Iran's opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi in Tehran.

Witnesses say it happened when a rally, involving hundreds of people marking the 30th anniversary of the storming of the US embassy, turned ugly.

Reformist website Mowjcamp said police opened fire on protesters and used batons at Haft-e Tir square. Some injuries are reported.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards and their allied Basij militia had warned the opposition to avoid using anti-US rallies to revive protests against the clerical establishment after June's disputed presidential election.

Those protests at the election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were among the worst since demonstrations three decades ago which led to the US backed Shah being ousted.
