'Giant pig' Bruce finds a home

A giant pig affectionately known as Bruce has been found a new home.

The 80 kilogram (176 pounds) porker had outstayed his welcome on a small Australian farm in Ike, New South Wales.

Bruce stumbled into Caroline Hayes' yard a couple of days ago and was fed and watered by his willing hostess.

The relationship turned sour, however, when Bruce, ever more demanding, went on the rampage around Ms Hayes' home.

Ms Hayes said: "It actually wouldn't let me out of my bedroom this morning. It pushed my door, it shoved me in, I fell over the top of my dog."

She added: "I picked up a broomstick which I had there, which is a broom I was sweeping my room with, and gave it a poke, and it actually bit the stick in half."

Ms Hayes told local TV she was amazed by Bruce's strength: "When I pushed, there was no way that I could've held this pig away. I thank God that the door half-closed on him."

Luckily for Bruce, Ms Hayes has saved his bacon, as he's being sent to a local piggery, where he may even be given stud duties to perform.

He will spend one more night at the farm before being removed by a pest and animal health ranger.

A local council spokeswoman said two attempts had previously been made to remove Bruce, but Ms Hayes - who is "an animal lover and a vegetarian" - didn't want a trap to be used.

The spokeswoman also said reports that Bruce was the size of a Shetland pony were "incorrect".
