Scarlett's mum: 'I was naive'

The mother of a schoolgirl found dead in Goa has labelled plans to question her for negligence as 'disgusting'.

The Chief Minister of Goa is reported to have said that Fiona MacKeown should be investigated for negligence after the semi-naked body of 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling was found on the beach in the resort of Anjuna on February 19.

Mrs MacKeown said she was being accused on "hearsay", adding: "I think it's disgusting. They should be focusing on the rubbish the police are putting forward."

Scarlett had been staying with a tour guide in Anjuna when she was last seen at a bar in the popular resort. Mrs MacKeown and the rest of the family were travelling in a nearby state.

She said Julio with whom Scarlett was left, was "very caring" of her, but believed that her daughter was having sexual relations with him.

"There was constant phone contact when she was not with us," she said.

Mrs MacKeown said she did feel responsibility but said Scarlett was not supposed to be out in the bars at 4am, adding: "I feel responsible for being naive and too trusting.

"I certainly do not feel I was negligent. She was in good hands with people who cared about her."

Authorities are continuing to question Samson D'Souza, 28, over her rape and murder following a court appearance on Monday. No charges have been brought against him and he was remanded in police custody for 14 days.

D'Souza was detained after witnesses alleged they saw him rape Scarlett and Goa police inspector Kisham Kumar said after the hearing that police were satisfied he had been involved.

According to some reports, Scarlett had taken drugs and was seen drinking in a bar in the resort of Anjuna on the night she died. She was reportedly in the company of three men - D'Souza, a Briton known locally as Masala Mike, who was D'Souza's flatmate, and a third male, Placido Carvalho.

Goa is extremely popular with Western tourists but in the last few years there have been problems with tourists dying from drug overdoses and women especially being attacked and sexually assaulted.

According to the Times Of India, 126 foreigners have died in Goa over the last two years and in January this year a 30-year-old British woman was raped.
