Arrest over forecourt stabbing

Detectives investigating the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old boy have arrested a teenager.

Courtney Eaton died following an altercation on a petrol station forecourt in Salford, Greater Manchester.

A police spokesman said: "Detectives this afternoon arrested a 17-year-old boy from Peel Green, Salford, on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody for questioning."

Officers were called to the scene near the Texaco petrol station in New Lane, Winton, and found the victim slumped on the pavement with a single stab wound to the stomach.

Courtney, from Winton, was taken to Hope Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Police said the disturbance shortly after 11pm yesterday involved a small number of people but one witness said she saw two youths fighting outside her home in New Lane while a gang of up to ten others wearing hooded tops surrounded the pair.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan said it was a "tragic incident".

He said: "We have uniformed officers at the scene to provide a reassuring presence for people in the community. They will remain there for the rest of the weekend.

"Fatalities like this are rare in Salford. However, one death is one too many."
