Cameron promises future Europe vote

Wed Nov 4 2009 16:28:36

David Cameron David Cameron has promised to change the law so that an agreement like the Lisbon Treaty "never happens again" without the British people first saying yes.

At a special news conference, the Tory leader has said under a Conservative Government no further powers would be handed over to Brussels without a national vote.

He acknowledged that his campaign for a nationwide vote on the Lisbon Treaty is now over after it was signed by all 27 members of the European Union.

Mr Cameron said: "Never again should it be possible for a British government to transfer power to the European Union without the say of the British people in a referendum."

He added that people would "resent" the fact that there would not be the referendum that was promised by Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

The Tories claim that powers are being "given away" to Europe by Labour.
