Computers' damaging carbon trail
The digital age may have brought the world to our computer.
But our computers are making a significant impact on the world.
A medium sized server has a similar carbon footprint to an SUV achieving 15 miles to the gallon.
A thousand PCs left on all day without any power save settings will consume up to £70,000 worth of electricity per year.
In 1980 before the introduction of computers, world office paper consumption averaged seventy million tonnes a year.
By 1997 it had more than doubled to almost 150 million tonnes.
