Beckham wants to stay in Milan

David Beckham abandoned his usual air of diplomacy when he confirmed he wants to quit LA Galaxy and stay with Milan.

The former England captain has spent two years playing in America but he proved his two-month loan spell with Milan has reignited his ambition.

Beckham arrived in Glasgow for a friendly against Rangers and delivered the usual platitudes at the airport, telling reporters how pleased he was to be in Scotland.

He played the first half of a 2-2 at Ibrox then confirmed he is ready to leave Los Angeles and his lawyers are trying to negotiate a way out of his five-year contract.

Beckham tried to reassure his American employers his decision was not intended to criticise the standard of football in Major League Soccer (MLS).

But it is clear he has decided his huge pay packet is not enough to satisfy him while he can still hold down a place in one of the strongest teams in Europe and possibly play for England at the 2010 World Cup.

He said: "I think people have seen the way I've been since I've been back at this level again.

"It's nothing against MLS and the football over there, because it's a game that will grow. But it will take quite a few years.

"I'm still confident that will happen eventually, but I want to have a chance of being involved in 2010 and I believe my best chance of doing so is to remain here.

"I have enjoyed my time here. I knew I would enjoy it but I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I have, and do as well as I have."

Beckham's decision will come as a huge blow to Major League Soccer.

The league changed its rules to accommodate him by dropping its wage limit to allow each club to employ one player on an increased contract.

Beckham was supposed to be the main draw, attracting people to football matches rather than the traditional American sports.

But it will be very difficult for him to return to California now he has revealed the standard of football does not meet his needs.

Beckham added: "I've expressed my desire to stay here for a while but at the moment I'm still a Galaxy player.

"I respect the Galaxy and everything they have done for me. They have always been great to me but I hope they can come to an agreement and it's down to the clubs now.

"At this point it's out of my hands. I've said what my feelings are to both clubs.

"To be given the chance again to play at this level at my age is pretty incredible and I've enjoyed it so much I would like to continue it."
