West and Winehouse lead Grammy nods

Kanye West and Amy Winehouse are leading the field in the Grammy nominations.

Hip hop star Kanye West is tipped for Grammy success after bagging eight nods, including a place in the album of the year category.

Winehouse confirmed her popularity in the US with six nominations, leading the way for the British contingency which includes Mika, The Chemical Brothers, Lily Allen and Sir Paul McCartney.

The neo-soul singer, whose promising career has been side-tracked by a host of personal problems, has been tipped for her Back To Black record.

Grammy winning producer John Shanks called her album "an important record".

Last month Winehouse cancelled her UK tour and other public appearances for the remainder of 2007 after a series of shambolic concerts.

Rockers the Foo Fighters, rapper Jay-Z, producer Timbaland, R&B singer T-Pain and pop star Justin Timberlake all received five nominations each.

The winners of the music industry's top honours will be announced during ceremonies in Los Angeles in February.
