Beckham lauded at sports awards

David Beckham was the centre of attention when he attended a star-studded US sporting awards show with wife Victoria.

A host of Hollywood stars including actors Samuel L Jackson, Forest Whitaker and High School Musical's Zac Efron, Brendan Fraser and Jet Li turned up to support the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards (ESPY) in Los Angeles.

The ceremony was hosted by pop star Justin Timberlake - the awards aim to honour the year's best sporting moments and achievements.

In keeping with the evening the pop star repeatedly praised Beckham for single-handedly making soccer more popular in the US.

In one tongue-in-cheek jibe, he held his thumb and index finger an inch apart and said: "Single-handedly you made soccer in America this much more popular."

Later on, the Cry Me A River star knelt down and kissed Beckham's shoe, to which wife Victoria - in uncharacteristically jovial spirits - said: "That's what £250 million tastes like!"

The singer-cum-fashion-designer chose a three-quarter-length dress in canary yellow to grace the red carpet, impressing photographers and critics.

Limping Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo also attended the event and later suggested that he may one day follow in Beckham's footsteps and move to America - as he did by moving to United.
