Michael Owen celebrates Manchester United have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup after beating hosts Barnsley 2-0.

The current cup holders secured their passage thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen, who scored his third of the season.

However, it was not plain sailing for United who ended their fixture with ten men for the second time in three days after Gary Neville was dismissed.

Elsewhere, there were home victories for both Blackburn and Portsmouth. Swine flu hit Blackburn crushed Peterborough 5-2 and struggling Pompey beat Stoke 4-0.

Tottenham also registered a home win, beating Everton 2-0.

Meanwhile Aston Villa won a tense victory against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light after beating them 3-1 on penalties following extra time.
