Wimbledon swaps tennis for banger racing
The Malaysian Grand Prix may have grabbed the headlines, but banger racing fans had their eyes firmly on Wimbledon this weekend.
A number of brave drivers from Britain and Europe have been fighting it out for the 2008 Figure Eight World Final.
"It's just something out of the ordinary," race official Vince Sharpe said.
"I mean it's just totally bizarre, I mean racing a car towards another coming the other way it's not most people's idea of fun.
"For these lads - they totally enjoy it, it's good entertainment for the crowd."
Rain and near freezing temperatures made driving conditions treacherous as the race began with a green flag.
A devoted crowd roared its approval as cars crashed and smoke billowed from early casualties.
The lead position swapped several times as competitors were nudged, crashed or spun out of contention.
And eventually a winner did emerge. Number 348, Sonny 'The Mush' Sherwood from Essex proudly took the trophy.
