Teen upkeep costs £1,000 a year
The average teenager spends almost £1,000 a year on socialising and looking good, a survey has shown.
Young people aged between 13 and 18 receive around £936 a year through a combination of pocket money and allowances, Christmas and birthday money, paid work and money for odd jobs.
According to the 3,025 teens surveyed by MTV One, the best-off 10 per cent of teenagers receive an average of £1,476 each year, but the poorest 10 per cent get just £144.
They spend an average of £350 each year on their appearance, while they spend around £360 on socialising and going out with their friends.
Four out of 10 teenagers said they spent around £260 a year on alcohol, while 18 per cent admitted they spent £240 on cigarettes.
The most expensive item teenagers own is likely to be designer shoes or clothes, with 63 per cent saying they had designer goods worth more than £250.
Teenagers receive around £78 a month in allowances, with 13-year-olds given around £45 a month, rising to £80 a month at 16 and £120 a month when they are 18.
On top of this, they also receive an average of £70 at Christmas and £50 for their birthday, with some teenagers getting up to £180 at Christmas and £150 for their birthday.
Two-thirds of teenagers also do some form of paid work, with the under-16s generally preferring gardening, car washing, dog walking and delivering newspapers.
Those aged over 16 are more likely to earn money as baby-sitters, shop assistants and waiters or waitresses.
