Tiger Woods claims his US Open play-off victory over Rocco Mediate is the greatest achievement of his career.

Woods clinched his 14th major title at the 19th extra hole, after finishing level with Mediate at the end of an 18-hole play-off.

He said: "I think this is probably the best ever.

"All things considered, I don't know how I ended up in this position to be honest with you.

"It was a long week. There was a lot of doubt, a lot of questions going into the week, and here we are 91 holes later."

The victory was even more remarkable considering Woods had surgery on his left knee nine weeks ago and had not played in a tournament since the Masters in April.

He plans to rest the knee for a while but expects to play in the Open at Royal Birkdale next month.
