Sun Nov 15 2009 14:41:07

Heavy snow in China Heavy snow has caused at least 38 deaths in northern China including four children.

The youngsters died under collapsed school canteen roofs in two separate provinces.

The snow has brought down more than 7,000 buildings nationwide and cost around 3.5 billion yuan which equates to £307 million in economic losses.

Xian, home to the renowned Terracotta Warriors, has reported its heaviest snowfall in more than two decades.

The north eastern province of Jilin expected to receive moderate to heavy snow again in the coming few days.

The quality of school buildings is a sensitive subject in China after last year's devastating Sichuan earthquake in which many collapsed while nearby offices and apartments stayed intact.
