Spain's tomato fighters see red

Tens of thousands of people have been throwing tomatoes at each other in Spain in what is possibly the world's biggest food fight.

Trucks dumped about 110 tonnes of tomatoes over the adrenaline-charged crowds in Bunol.

Within minutes the town's square was covered in red juice.

Up to 40,000 people took part in this year's Tomatina event.

Local folklore says the contest began with a food fight that broke out between youngsters near a vegetable stand in the town in the mid-1940s.

From there the battle grew into an annual event.
