The White House has condemned the latest militant attacks in Afghanistan.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said an attack at a US guest house in Kabul was an attempt to disrupt Afghanistan's presidential run-off election next month.
He added that the militants "will not succeed."
Six UN staff were killed when Taliban militants attacked an international guest house in Kabul while a rocket was fired at a foreign-owned hotel in the Afghan capital.
Mr Gibbs also condemned the bombing of a market place in Pakistan. He said it showed the extent to which extremists will go. Many of the victims were women and children.
