Director Terry Gilliam has admitted he thought his film, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, would not be completed.
The filmmaker has said he had doubts after the death of lead actor Heath Ledger.
"Heath was greatly loved by a lot of people," Gilliam said, talking about the star who died of an accidental drug overdose during filming.
But Gilliam, speaking at the movie's Hollywood premiere, said it was finished through the help of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell.
"We had a magic mirror, magic mirrors are very important, since they solve some of these extraordinary problems, when the lead actor dies half way through the shoot, " Gilliam added.
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale set in the present day. It tells the story of a travelling show where the audience can choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom.
It also stars model-turned actress Lily Cole and veteran actress Christopher Plummer.
