Arrests in 'Good Samaritan' banker murder

Three men have been arrested over the murder of a banking executive who was killed helping a homeless man assaulted in a street fight.

Father-of-two Frank McGarahan, 45, chief operating officer of Barclays Wealth, had been queuing for a taxi on Guildhall Hill in Norwich city centre at 3am on Sunday ahead of a family christening.

Police said he witnessed an assault on a 35-year-old homeless Lithuanian man and then, along with his brother and cousin, was caught up in the brawl.

Mr McGarahan was knocked unconscious and taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge where he died of head injuries a day later.

Mr McGarahan's brother, Tony - the interim communications manager of the Bradford & Bingley - has spoken of his devastation, saying his relatives will never "truly recover" from the loss.

Speaking outside the family home in Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, Mr McGarahan said: "We are all devastated by our loss. Everyone who knew Frank remembers him as a caring, kind, considerate, generous and funny man.

He added: "He was a fantastic father to his two young beautiful daughters, a loving husband to his wife, a big-hearted son to his mum and dad and a brilliant brother and uncle.

"He was simply a great family man."

"This tragedy, a vicious wicked murder, ruins the life and lives of so many people who must eventually pick up the pieces and carry on. And we will try to do that but without Frank in our family and in our lives.

"We will never understand how or why anyone could murder such a decent, caring and loving man.

"We will never comprehend it or truly recover from it."
