Hospital apologises for swapping babies

Hospital bosses have been forced to apologise to two mums for accidentally swapping their babies.

The newborn babies were switched "for a brief time" after staff at Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop, Nottinghamshire failed to check their identity bands.

One of the babies was breast-fed by the wrong mother and had to undergo a number of checks including a HIV test.

The hospital's maternity unit received an "excellent" rating from the Healthcare Commission before news of the blunder emerged.

Managers at the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have apologised to the two mums.

A spokesman for the trust said: "This is an extraordinary and most unfortunate incident, which we deeply regret."
