A dog which braved busy motorway traffic to rescue another pooch has become a hero in Chile.

CCTV pictures from the Santiago highway show the real-life Littlest Hobo trotting past speeding cars to pull the body of another dog, fatally struck by a vehicle, away from traffic.

The scene was broadcast by Chilean TV stations and then posted on websites such as YouTube, where it has been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people.

Motorway crews removed the dead dog and the hero canine from the middle of the motorway, but the hero canine ran away.

Authorities say images of the rescue prompted some people to call and offer to adopt the stray dog, but neither highway workers nor a TV crew have been able to find it.
