Fort Hood suspect charged with 13 murders The military psychiatrist accused of shooting dead 13 military staff at a US Army base has been charged with their murders.

Major Nidal Malik Hasan will face 13 counts of premeditated murder under the military's legal system over the massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, last week.

Further charges could being laid in relation to the unborn child of one of the victims.

If convicted, the 39-year-old could face the death penalty.

Chris Grey, spokesman for the US Army's criminal investigations division, said Hasan was currently being held "under pre-trial restriction while receiving medical care".

He added that the investigation was ongoing, but that it was still believed the gunman acted alone.
