Ana Ivanovic has won the French Open, beating Dinara Safina 6-4 6-3 in the final at Roland Garros.

The Serbian looked the stronger player throughout the final but Safina put up a good fight towards the end of the second set.

Ivanovic had several break points as they seventh game of the set went to deuce.

Safina dug deep and won the game to give herself a slim chance of victory but Ivanovic broke her at the next attempt to clinch the championship.

It is the first time Ivanovic has won a Grand Slam title.

She will overtake Maria Sharapova at the top of the world rankings on Monday.
