British actress Carey Mulligan said getting her first Golden Globe nomination is "surreal".
The 24-year-old has been recognised in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama category for her part in An Education.
Carey said: "I don't think I sounded as excited as I was," after hearing the news. "But I was so tired I found it hard to form words. I wanted to go outside and scream a bit, so I did."
The newcomer, who is starring in Wall Street 2, will go up against Dame Helen Mirren for the trophy. The Oscar winner received her nomination for her part in the Leo Tolstoy biopic, The Last Station.
The 64-year-old said she hoped it would bring more attention to the movie.
"It doesn't have a massive marketing budget. It doesn't have the power of a big studio behind it. These kinds of independent films are made for love, not money. For it to find its audience, its rightful audience, it's very difficult," said Mirren.
Avatar director, James Cameron, was just as pleased about the four nods for his latest epic, including Best Film and Best Director.
He said: "It's unexpected because it's a sci-fi fantasy film and these are often dismissed or overlooked come awards time, because audiences love them, so they're commercial. It's great that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association saw past that."
The Golden Globes, which take place on 17 January, will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.
