Aruna Dindane destroyed Wigan with a superb hat-trick in their 4-0 win, but Paul Hart's side still remain bottom of the Premier League.
Dindane's treble was accompanied by a goal from strike partner Frederic Piquionne as Pompey scored four goals for the second time this week.
However, there was more concern for debt-ridden Pompey when Piquionne was stretchered off in the second half with a head injury.
Wigan were outfought and outplayed throughout and never tested England goalkeeper David James.
The home side almost made the perfect start when Kevin-Prince Boateng fired just over the crossbar inside the opening minute.
Pompey, 4-0 victors over Stoke in the Carling Cup in midweek, enjoyed a bright opening and a corner from Jamie O'Hara was almost turned home by Hassan Yebda.
The home side finally broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with a simple goal.
Michael Brown split the Wigan defence with a fine through-ball into the path of Dindane, who outpaced Mario Melchiot and flicked the ball over the advancing Kirkland for his first Premier League goal.
Pompey made the visitors pay the price in first-half injury time when Dindane, on loan from Lens, put Piquionne through and the striker ran clear to beat Kirkland with a low drive.
Dindane then tapped home a cross from Kanu at the far post to put Pompey 3-0 in front in the 64th minute.
Pompey stretched their unbeaten run to three games when Kanu was brought down by Boyce and Dindane completed his hat-trick from the spot in the 90th minute.
