Airport ownership under spotlight

Air passengers fed up with crowded terminals will learn next week if there is to be a shake-up of the industry.

The Competition Commission (CC) is to present its findings into the services provided by BAA whose airports include Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.

And the CC could call for a break-up of the "monopoly" enjoyed by Spanish-run BAA which has faced severe criticism from airlines, passengers and politicians.

The commission will also set out its possible remedies which could include the sale of one or more of BAA's seven airports.

The CC has already published its "emerging thinking" on its BAA inquiry in a document that came out in April this year.

Dissatisfaction with BAA's airport performance has been exacerbated by stricter baggage regulations and by the disastrous opening of Heathrow's £4.3 billion Terminal 5 in March this year.

The latest person to criticise BAA is London Mayor Boris Johnson whose bags went missing at Gatwick when he returned from a family holiday.

He said it was vital to "sort this chaos out now" ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.

The CC's final report into BAA is expected to be published by the end of this year.
