Baby elephant takes her first steps

Moscow Zoo is celebrating the birth of an Asian elephant for the first time in its history.

The new-born pachyderm, who has yet to be named, was allowed to take her first walk outdoors, chaperoned by her mother and another female elephant friend.

The news of the baby elephant's first walk attracted numerous excited visitors of all ages.

Asian elephants rarely breed in captivity and none have been born in Moscow in the zoo's 164-year history.

The Zoo management is organising a contest among city locals to come up with a name for the new arrival.
