Post strikes delay 30 million letters

Royal Mail bosses have revealed the national post strikes have delayed 30 million letters so far.

However, the second day of action by workers is said to be "solidly supported", with some staff not involved in the walk-out refusing to cross picket lines.

Around 78,000 delivery and collection workers have downed tools.

The Communication Workers Union says demonstrations have been mounted outside mail offices across the country, and that strikers are receiving "strong support".

It comes as an opinion poll shows twice as many people sympathise with the postal workers than with Royal Mail management.

The CWU has served notice of further walk-outs starting next Thursday.

The union has offered "unconditional" talks at the conciliation service Acas in an attempt to break the deadlocked row over jobs, pay and modernisation.
