Woman becomes mum and granny at once
A Brazilian woman has become a mum and a gran at the same time after being a surrogate mother for her own daughter.
Rosinete Serrao, 51, gave birth to twins in her home town of Recife.
Four embryos, fertilised by her 27-year-old daughter Claudia Michelle and her husband Antonio de Brito, were implanted in Rosinete's uterus in January.
Brazilian law only allows close relatives to serve as surrogate mothers, but Michelle, who is unable to have babies, had no female siblings. Despite the risk, Rosinete did not hesitate in accepting her daughter's request.
Doctor Claudio Ribeiro, who assisted in the operation, said: "There has never been a case like this in the world, of twins developing inside a grandmother's uterus."
The family, who watched the birth from a screen inside the waiting room, celebrated the procedure's success. The twins, Antonio Bento and Vitor Gabriel were born healthy and required no special medical care.
