Charlton have been relegated from the Premiership after a 2-0 defeat by Tottenham at the Valley.

The Addicks needed to win to stand any chance of avoiding the drop into the Championship, but Dimitar Berbatov put Spurs ahead after six minutes.

The Bulgaria international flicked the ball past a Charlton defender then raced into the penalty area and slotted past Scott Carson.

Former Charlton trainee Jermain Defoe added the second in injury-time, lashing home from 25 yards on the counter-attack.

The defeat ends a season of upheaval at Charlton.

Since Alan Curbishley resigned as manager 12 months ago, the club have appointed and sacked Iain Dowie and Les Reed.

Charlton go down, along with Watford, and they will be joined by one of four other clubs when the final Premiership matches are played on Sunday.

Wigan, West Ham, Sheffield United and Fulham are still in danger, but Wigan are in the most perilous position as they must beat Sheffield United to stand any chance of staying up.

Charlton have spent seven seasons in the top flight since they won the first division title in 2000.
