Sir Alex Ferguson wants Manchester United to step up a gear after suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Italian champions Inter Milan.

Poor first-half defending cost the Red Devils dear after Wayne Rooney opened the scoring in the Old Trafford friendly.

Manchester United will be hoping to put down an earlier marker for their Premier League title defence by beating FA Cup and Carling Cup winners Chelsea in Sunday's Community Shield

Inter struck three times before half-time and although Adriano's own goal gave Ferguson's men hope, they could not stave off a defeat.

The 65-year-old United boss reflected: "The defending in the first-half was very poor. You will not win any games, no matter who you are playing against, if you defend like that.

"We were so open in the first-half. Maybe we would have had a few more free-kicks if it had been an English game but we were all over the place at times. If you defend like that, you will lose."
