McManus to play disco Mary
Singer Michelle McManus has landed the lead role in a new musical as the Virgin Mary.
The Pop Idol winner will star in a funky stage version of the nativity story called Discotivity.
The panto-style production will tell the story of the birth of Jesus set to a soundtrack of disco tunes.
McManus, 27, explained that it was the quality of the script that convinced her to go for the part.
"People may be surprised that I've chosen to play this role but I loved the script. I felt this was a great challenge and would be a lot of fun as well."
The Scot will take to the stage from August 1 to 27 at Edinburgh's Gilded Balloon and then at the Arts Theatre in London from December 4 to January 20.
