Gordon Brown has no plans to scrap the pound but admitted Britain constantly considers the possibility of joining the Euro.

The Prime Minister was speaking in Paris, where he was holding talks with the French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

"This is obviously a matter that is kept under review. I cannot say that there are any proposals to join the Euro in the near future."

Mr Brown said: "This is obviously a matter that is kept under review. I cannot say that there are any proposals to join the Euro in the near future."

The Labour Government is known to be in favour of joining the Euro if five economic tests are met.

But the debate has died down and Mr Brown's comments suggest he is not close to discussing the possibility.

Britain, Denmark and Sweden are the only members of the European Union that have not adopted the Euro as their currency.
