Dr Who attracts 8 million viewers

More than eight million people tuned in to see David Tennant return as Doctor Who.

The Timelord rematerialised with a new assistant, comedian Catherine Tate, who plays runaway bride Donna.

A total of 8.4 million viewers watched the first episode of the latest series of the cult show- an audience share of 39.4 per cent.

Writer Russell T Davies described Tate, better known for her character sketches including 'Am I bovvered?' schoolgirl Lauren, as the Doctor's perfect companion.

There was a surprise one-off appearance from former sidekick Billie Piper as Rose Tyler.
