Uncle remanded over toddler's rape and murder

A man has been remanded in custody charged with the rape and murder of his two-year-old niece.

Michael Mullen, 21, has appeared before magistrates in Leeds after Casey Leigh Mullen was found strangled at her home in Oak Tree Crescent in the Gipton area of the city on Sunday.

A Leeds City Council spokesman confirmed social services were briefly involved with the family following an incident in 2005.

Mullen, of Lawrence Road, Gipton, will appear at Leeds Crown Court on February 21.

Two other men, aged 19 and 20, who were initially arrested on suspicion of murder, were released without charge.
