Alcoholic drinks are being served in increasingly larger measures, fooling people into drinking more than they should, doctors have warned.

President Professor Ian Gilmore said: "There is no doubt at all that many people are drinking significantly more than they realise.

"People are aware of units, they want to stay within safe limits, but they are being pushed up way over those limits by just not realising what they are drinking."

His warning comes after Liberal Democrat MP Greg Mulholland said in January that a 125ml serving of wine was a thing of the past with size 250ml glasses becoming more common.

The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers said customers are being offered a choice.
