Windsurfer winched to safety

A missing windsurfer has been winched to safety following a major rescue operation.

The 47-year-old was close to the mouth of the River Don north of Aberdeen harbour when he got into difficulties.

A member of the public raised the alarm at 5.30p.m. after seeing a windsurfer "in trouble" in the North Sea three miles north of Aberdeen.

A coastguard spokesman said the surfer was located in the water at around 7.15p.m.

He said: "He was on his board but was not standing and the sail was down. He was described as looking in difficulty and looking exhausted."

He was said to be "hypothermic but walking wounded" when he arrived at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
