A bomb blast has killed 17 new Iraqi army recruits and wounded 20 others while they were travelling on a road near Baghdad.

It was unclear if the new recruits, who were in a truck, were killed by a roadside bomb or if a suicide car bomber had rammed into their vehicle.

The recruits were Sunni Arabs from western Anbar province who had just joined the Iraqi security forces

The Sunday attack follows a huge truck bomb at an outdoor market in northern Iraq which killed at least 115 people on Saturday.

It was one of the deadliest bombings this year and happened in the largely Shi'ite town of Tuz Khurmato while many people were shopping. A further 250 people were injured.
