Will Smith has been joined by pal Tom Cruise for the premiere of his new film, I Am Legend.

It comes a day after the Top Gun star celebrated with Smith after he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

I Am Legend is based on the 1954 Richard Matheson novel

The pair have been friends for years after Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, worked with the star on Collateral.

He said: "We have very similar attitudes on wanting people to do well. He is committed in the same way that I am committed in wanting the world to be better, wanting to help people that we can help.

"Even with this film, I Am Legend, he probably did 15 hours worth of notes with me."

Cruise said: "We work together on things; whatever I can do to help in anyway. (But) he doesn't need any help. He's Will Smith."

I Am Legend is based on the 1954 Richard Matheson novel.

Smith plays Robert Neville, a scientist who ends up living alone in New York with only his dog for company, after the whole city is wiped out by a terrible disease.

Immune to the virus, he spends the next three years looking for food and possible survivors - but they are all infected and are waiting for a chance to infect him too.

I Am Legend opens in the UK on December 26.
