Regular international matches between England and Scotland could be back on the football fixture list from 2010.

The teams played the first-ever international football match in 1872 and they arranged an annual friendly until 1989, stopped only by two breaks for world wars.

"The idea would be to establish some sort of relationship for one-off games or even have them biannually" - Gordon Smith

Gordon Smith, chief executive of the Scottish Football Association, has held talks with his FA counterpart Brian Barwick and the teams could resume that tradition when they find the next gap in their fixtures.

Smith said: "I've had discussions with Brian Barwick about resurrecting the Scotland v England games and it's definitely back on.

"It might be 2010 before we get a game. The idea would be to establish some sort of relationship for one-off games or even have them biannually."

The teams last met in a qualification play-off for Euro 2000 in 1999 and they played each other in the group stage at Euro 96.

The teams have played 110 international matches against each other, with England winning 45 times and Scotland 41.
