Vaughan hails 'ruthless' England
Michael Vaughan has branded England ruthless after seeing his men ease to a record innings-and-283-run win over the West Indies in the second Test at Headingley.
It was the 20th time England have won under the fit-again 32-year-old Yorkshire batsman in Tests, equalling Peter May's record.
And he was impressed by the way bowlers Ryan Sidebottom, playing his first Test six years after making his debut, Steve Harmison and Liam Plunkett twice swept through the Windies' batsmen after England had declared on 570-7.
Vaughan, who struck a century on his return after 18 months out of the Test side and enjoyed a 163-run third-wicket stand with Kevin Pietersen (226), said: "We were ruthless and got the job done.
"When you win by an innings and plenty, it's quite a big defeat for the opposition, but we're only 1-0 up with two to play. We've got to do exactly the same in a week's time at Old Trafford.
"Of course there are areas we could have done better, but you never ever produce a 100 per cent performance - we were pretty close to that this time."
England took their number of centuries in two matches against the tourists to seven with man-of-the-match Pietersen hitting his highest Test score yet and Vaughan reaching three figures for the 16th time in his 65th appearance.
Despite Pietersen's display at Headingley, he remains in third position in the International Cricket Council's list behind Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan.
However, the 26-year-old's scintillating 226 against West Indies at Headingley did push his individual rating above 900, which has been achieved by only 21 players in history.
