Exeter explosion suspect in court
A Muslim convert has appeared in court accused of a botched suicide bomb attack on a city centre restaurant.
Nicky Reilly, 22, suffered serious injuries in the blast at the Giraffe restaurant in Exeter last month. He was the only person injured.
Reilly appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Belmarsh Prison under the name Mohamed Saeed-Alim.
He faces one charge under the Terrorism Act 2006 of preparing for terrorism. He is also charged with possession of an explosive substance with intent.
It is alleged he researched how to make a bomb using paraffin, nails and soft drink bottles, and assembled one in the toilet of the restaurant.
Reilly, of King Street, Plymouth, spoke only to confirm he understood and could hear proceedings during the 20-minute hearing.
He wore a white polo shirt and wounds caused by the blast could still be seen on his arms and face.
Mr Justice Calvert-Smith said a plea and case management hearing will take place on October 15. He said any trial may be held in the West Country.
