The death toll from the California wildfires now stands at 12 after the discovery of four bodies near the Mexican border.

It is thought the victims may have been illegal immigrants caught in the flames while trying to cross into the US.

"I've come to let you know that we are not going to forget you in Washington DC" - George W Bush

People are slowly returning to their homes to inspect damage and one-stop support centres are being set up to help those who have lost everything.

US President George W Bush has met victims of the wildfires.

Mr Bush walked through the debris of destroyed homes with state Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and promised to help people rebuild their lives.

More than a million people have been forced to flee their properties although some families are now being allowed to return.

Mr Bush told them: "We appreciate your spirit. We really do, because all of us who met you are very impressed by your determination to deal with this tough moment in your life and rebuild your lives.

"To the extent that people need help from the federal government, we will help.

"These fires are going to go out because of the bravery of the people behind us. But there is still going to be needs and concerns. And the final reason I've come is to let you know that we are not going to forget you in Washington DC.

"We want the people to know that there is a better day ahead. That today your life might look dismal, but tomorrow life is going to be better. And to the extent that the federal government can help we want to do so."

The blazes have killed at least three people, sent hundreds of thousands fleeing their homes and burned nearly half a million acres.

Mr Schwarzenegger said: "These fires are amongst the worst disasters in Californian history, and the president and I just had a heartbreaking tour of the disaster and some of the devastation.

"With 1,400 homes being destroyed and nearly half a million acres having been burned, the only way to grasp the true magnitude is to see it for yourself and to be out there with the people whose lives have been turned upside down."
