Footballer arrested for alleged assault

Footballer Andy Cole has been arrested after an alleged assault on his wife.

The former England player was questioned and released by police on Monday.

Nottingham-born Cole married his long-term girlfriend Shirley Dewar in Wilmslow in July 2002.

He is currently on loan to Burnley from Sunderland and lives in Alderley Edge in Cheshire.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At 2.27am on Monday February 25, police were called to a house in Alderley Edge following an allegation of assault by a man against a woman.

"A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and was taken to Middlewich custody suite."

He added: "He was interviewed and released last night on police bail until a date in April pending further inquiries."
