Tennis legend John McEnroe could be about to net £350,000 as he puts an Andy Warhol painting of himself up for sale.

The 40ins by 40ins portrait of McEnroe and his former wife Tatum O'Neal was painted by the artist in 1986.

Proceeds from the sale of the portrait will go to the Habitat for Humanity charity which provides not-for-profit housing with the help of volunteers

It is just one of four Warhol pieces going under the hammer at Sotheby's Contemporary Art Sale in London on July 1.

Warhol's Campbell's soup can, considered by many as the single most iconic image of post-war art, is expected to fetch between £2.5 to £3.5 million.

McEnroe explained why he is selling the painting now by saying: "The fact that the value of a Warhol has gone up, so it seemed like an opportune time.

"The market's been strong in art, probably the strongest it's ever been right now, it seems rather crazy so, it seems like a good time that, the odds hopefully will favour that there will be a good sale."

Proceeds from the sale of the portrait will go to the Habitat for Humanity charity which provides not-for-profit housing with the help of volunteers.

Asked about the timing of the sale, with the Wimbledon tennis tournament having started, McEnroe said: "This is part of why I'm selling it this week, so be it the little extra excitement for me and hope that the, it sells well, and that the money goes to a good cause.

"You know every year around this time is good for me and I'm looking forward to getting, to getting down there."
