Serena Williams ended a 21-month wait for Grand Slam glory by winning the US Open.

The American beat Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-4 7-5 to claim the ninth major title of her career.

"I felt like I have been working the hardest" - Serena Williams

She said: "I'm so excited. I can't even describe it. Usually after a Grand Slam I feel like I still have another match to play, but I don't really feel that way today.

"I feel like it's done and it's all over, and I'm so excited. I think it showed on the court."

The victory has also lifted Williams above Ana Ivanovic in the world rankings.

She added: "I've been working so hard all year. It's all paying off. I felt like I've been working the hardest, I should win."
