Dead British airman named

A British airman who died following a rocket attack on his base in southern Iraq has been named as Segeant Duane "Baz" Barwood.

The 41-year-old, who was attached to 903 Expeditionary Air Wing, Royal Air Force, was killed when the Basra air base came under fire on Friday night.

His death takes the British military death toll in Iraq to 175 since hostilities began in March 2003.

There have been relatively few fatalities since troops withdrew from a base at Basra Palace to the city's airport in September.

Since then three service personnel have died following vehicle accidents and three members of the SAS have been killed on operations.

Sgt Barwood's next of kin have been informed of his death, the Ministry of Defence said.
