A hotly-anticipated fantasy adventure starring Nicole Kidman has received a premiere of its trailer in New York.

The Golden Compass, starring the Aussie actress and Daniel Craig, is set to rival the Harry Potter franchise as it is also based on a popular children's book.

The adventure follows a young girl through a parallel universe as she tries to save her best friend and other kidnapped children from terrible experiments by a mysterious organisation

The mystical film is taken from Philip Pullman's best-selling and award-winning novel, called Northern Lights in the UK, and is the first story in the His Dark Materials trilogy.

Most of the main characters in the film also have an animal companion, which is a living manifestation of their soul.

British actress Kristin Scott Thomas will voice one of the animals Stelmaria and Ian McKellen has replaced newcomer Nonso Anozie as the new voice of Bear King Iorek Byrnison.

Compass is set to hit cinemas on December 7.
