The greatest album of all time?
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, released 40 years ago today, was recorded at Abbey Road studios over a 129-day period.
The Beatles' completely self-contained eighth album was meant to be played and experienced from start to finish.
Its front cover was designed by Sir Peter Blake and featured a colourful collage of life-sized cardboard models of famous people including Marlon Brando and Karl Marx.
The album features elaborate arrangements and extensive use of studio effects including echo, reverberation and reverse tape effects, many of which were devised in collaboration with producer George Martin and his team of engineers.
Sgt Pepper won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, the first rock album to do so, and Best Contemporary Album in 1968.
In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at number one on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
