Staff should be offered more flexible hours, including the opportunity to work from home, according to a new report.

The study carried out by Microsoft said that workers should be given the option of avoiding the Monday rush to the office, gloomy weather, and illnesses among colleagues.

The report also suggested steering clear of germs, spending less time commuting and having the chance to work from home was good for mental and physical health.

Psychologist Dr Aric Sigman said that workers did not have to be "chained" to their desks any more, adding: "We can all complete work obligations without being in the office."

James McCarthy of Microsoft said: "Work is something you do, not somewhere you go. Most office workers could explore simple ways to become more productive outside the office, with the cooperation of their employer."

The software giant has suggested the launch of a national "moof" day - mobile out of office - which would highlight the possibilities of working away from the office.
